The Facts of Benzodiazepine Dependence
Short-term relief, and a dependence that can develop quietly.
Benzodiazepines — alprazolam, clonazepam, lorazepam, diazepam — work well for short-term anxiety and panic. Beyond a few weeks, tolerance builds, the original symptoms return more intensely between doses, and stopping becomes genuinely difficult. Most people who become dependent did exactly what they were told to do with a legitimate prescription.

Benzodiazepine dependence is a distinctive problem: the medication was usually prescribed for a real condition, so recovery means both coming off the drug safely and finally treating the anxiety, panic, insomnia, or trauma it was masking. Our mental-health-first model is built for that. Care is directed by our physician owners, with psychiatric evaluation to establish what is actually being treated, non-benzodiazepine medication options where clinically appropriate, and therapy aimed squarely at the anxiety itself — cognitive behavioral work, trauma-focused approaches, and practical skills for sleep and panic that the prescription had replaced. Protracted symptoms can persist for months after stopping, so discharge planning arranges continued psychiatric and therapeutic support rather than ending at the door.

We do not offer medical detox. When detox is needed, we refer you to a trusted partner first — then you transition to Legacy for residential treatment.

No — this is the one thing not to do. Abrupt cessation can cause seizures and can be life-threatening. Any change should be made through a gradual taper supervised by a physician, never on your own.
No. Legacy does not offer detox services, and benzodiazepine tapers require medical supervision. That must be completed elsewhere first; we coordinate with licensed providers and welcome you into residential care once it’s complete.
Physical dependence can develop on a correctly prescribed medication taken as directed, and that is not a moral failing. What matters clinically is whether tolerance, interdose withdrawal, and difficulty stopping are present — not how the prescription started.
That is exactly what treatment addresses. Coming off without treating the underlying anxiety, panic, insomnia, or trauma tends not to hold, so therapy and non-benzodiazepine options are central rather than secondary.
