The Facts of PTSD and Trauma
Memories that never finished processing.
PTSD develops when the brain stores an overwhelming experience without fully processing it, so it continues to arrive with the force of the present rather than settling into the past. Complex trauma, from prolonged or repeated experiences, often looks different — less flashback, more difficulty with trust, identity, and emotional regulation. Both are treatable with structured trauma-focused therapy.

IS TRAUMA TREATMENT RIGHT FOR YOU?
When the past is still operating in the present.
Trauma symptoms are often mistaken for personality, anxiety, or depression for years. If these patterns sound familiar in you or someone you love, it’s worth a confidential conversation, at no cost and with no obligation.
01
Intrusive memories and flashbacks
Images, sounds, or sensations arriving uninvited and landing as though the event is happening now. Talking about them repeatedly has not reduced their intensity.
02
A nervous system that stays on alert
Startling easily, scanning rooms, sleeping badly, bracing for something. Knowing you are safe has not persuaded your body of it.
03
Avoidance and numbing
Routing around places, people, and conversations — or feeling flat and disconnected from everything, including the good. Both are the same protective mechanism working too hard.
04
Using something to keep it down
Alcohol, cannabis, or other substances to sleep or to stop the memories is one of the most common patterns we see, and treating the substance alone leaves the driver intact. If there are thoughts of self-harm, call or text 988, or call 911 in an emergency.
Some individuals may require medical detoxification or stabilization before beginning residential treatment. Our admissions team can help determine the appropriate level of care and coordinate with an outside provider when necessary.
Treating PTSD and Trauma
Preparation, then processing — at a pace you can hold.
Trauma treatment at Legacy Recovery Center is deliberately sequenced. Stabilization comes first: sleep, grounding skills, and the reliable ability to return to baseline, because processing traumatic material before that is in place tends to overwhelm rather than help. Only then does structured trauma work begin, using EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy, and somatic approaches selected for the person and the target — some people respond to one and not another. Sessions are paced so nothing is opened faster than it can be closed, which is the practical advantage of doing this work in residence: a clinician and a structured environment are available in the days afterward, when trauma processing tends to stir things up. Where substance use has been managing the symptoms, both are treated together. Discharge planning arranges continued trauma-informed care.

CONDITIONS WE TREAT
What we're equipped to treat — and what we're not.
Legacy treats adults in a residential setting across two levels of care — Primary Mental Health RTC and Substance Abuse RTC — including any combination of the conditions below. Honesty is part of care: if we’re not the right fit, we’ll tell you, and help you find who is.
We do not offer medical detox. When detox is needed, we refer you to a trusted partner first — then you transition to Legacy for residential treatment.
THE LEGACY DIFFERENCE
Doctors who answer to you — not investors.
Legacy is owned and led by the two psychiatrists who founded it. That changes how decisions get made, from your treatment plan to how long you stay.
01
Physician-owned and led
Founded and run by Dr. Roland Segal, MD and Dr. Ehab Abdallah, MD — board-certified psychiatrists involved in care every week.
02
Mental health treated first
Every stay starts with a psychiatric evaluation, so the conditions driving substance use are treated — not just the symptoms.
03
A home, not a hospital
Private residences in quiet neighborhoods — real bedrooms, shared meals, and space to breathe.
04
Personalized treatment plans
Your plan is built around your history and goals, and adjusted weekly as you progress.
05
In-network insurance
In-network with Cigna and Aetna, with benefits usually verified the same day you call.
06
24/7 admissions
You’ll reach our admissions team directly — any hour, any day. For a medical emergency, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.
The First Step Is to Seek Help
You don't have to do this alone.
Many people carry trauma for decades before treating it, often because they were told what happened wasn’t serious enough to count. Whether an experience qualifies is not the useful question — whether it is still affecting you is.
Care in a residential setting is designed to support recovery. You’ll work with licensed clinicians and receive psychiatric care from our owners, Dr. Roland Segal and Dr. Ehab Abdallah. You’ll step away from the environment tied to your drinking, and be surrounded by others facing the same challenge.

FAQ
Frequently asked questions about PTSD and trauma treatment
Have questions about treatment, insurance, or what to expect? We’ve answered the most common ones here. If you don’t see yours, our team is always available.
PTSD typically follows a single overwhelming event and centers on intrusive memories and hyperarousal. Complex PTSD follows prolonged or repeated experiences and tends to involve difficulties with emotional regulation, self-concept, and relationships alongside those symptoms.
Not in the way most people fear. EMDR in particular requires far less verbal recounting than talk-based approaches, which is one reason it helps people who have found it impossible to describe an event.
EMDR, Accelerated Resolution Therapy, and somatic approaches, chosen for the person and the target rather than applied uniformly. Preparation and stabilization come before any processing.
Yes, and this pairing is very common. Substance use is frequently an attempt to manage trauma symptoms, so treating both together is the approach most likely to hold.
Most adults stay between 30 and 90 days, with 24-hour structured residential support throughout. Trauma work is paced deliberately rather than compressed.
