About Trauma

Trauma is a response that follows the occurrence of a horrific or life-threatening event, such as a serious accident, a devastating natural disaster, or a rape or other brutal attack. A traumatic event causes extreme fear, stress and a feeling of powerlessness that affect the person’s ability to cope. Afterward, the victim may experience changes in mood, personality, relationships and even in the ability to function. Trauma increases the risk for anxiety, depression, substance abuse, self-harm and other problems.

Is trauma the same thing as post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)?

Not always. What may be traumatic for one individual is not always traumatic to someone else. We are unique in how situations impact us, and also our responses to those situations.  A traumatic event occurs at a specific time, while PTSD is a longer-term condition in which trauma is followed by flashbacks during which one continually re-experiences the traumatic event. PTSD occurs with severe or unresolved trauma, seriously disrupts one’s life by preventing the sufferer from interacting normally, and can lead to job loss, divorce and suicide.

Individuals who experience trauma, and develop a trauma related disorder such as PTSD will need both psychiatric, and therapeutic support to heal. Trauma can cause the brain to re-wire itself so that it responds to certain stimuli in a maladaptive way. These stimuli are known as “triggers” When someone is triggered their brain cannot recognize the difference in what is currently happening, and what occurred when the traumatic event happened.

Trauma Resolution Therapy

At Legacy Recovery Center, an inpatient mental health treatment facility in Chandler, Arizona, we employ evidence-based therapies to treat individuals in the greater Phoenix area who suffer from trauma and PTSD. A residential setting provides our clients greater time and more opportunities to open up, focus on themselves and do the deep-seated work required than would be offered in an outpatient setting.

Evidence-based trauma therapies address trauma caused by a single event or a long-lasting situation. Certified trauma therapists and psychologists choose from among the following therapies to treat trauma sufferers: Prolonged Exposure (PE), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) and Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR). Some offer attachment and trauma therapy and developmental trauma treatment to help those whose trauma stems from harmful childhood experiences.

Trauma reduction therapy helps reduce fear and avoidance, improves coping skills, builds trust in others, challenges negative thought patterns and validates the individual’s experiences. The mental health professionals at Legacy Recovery Center focus on TF-CBT and EMDR therapies, and additional support is available as needed from our owners and experienced psychiatrists, Dr. Roland Segal and Dr. Ehab Abdallah.

Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavior Therapy (TF-CBT)

Cognitive behavior techniques help individuals with mental disorders change their distorted or unhelpful thinking and negative reactions and behaviors. The trauma-focused approach directly addresses the impacts of traumatic events and aims to prevent or reduce PTSD symptoms. The foundation of TF-CBT therapy is that one’s negative emotions linked to the memories of the traumatic event and the way the individual thinks about the event can lead the individual to develop PTSD symptoms.

Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR) Therapy

EMDR is an approach that uses the client’s rapid, rhythmic eye movements to diminish the power of the traumatic event’s emotionally charged memories. The therapist moves his or her fingers in front of the client’s face. While the client’s eyes follow the finger motions, he or she is simultaneously asked to recall the event and the emotions it triggered. The therapist steadily guides the individual to more pleasant thoughts. Negative emotions weaken and disturbing memories lose their power.
