Inflated Sense of Self

An inflated sense of self is an exaggerated belief in one's abilities or importance, often linked to addiction or certain mental health disorders.

What is an Inflated Sense of Self?

An inflated sense of self, also known as grandiosity, refers to an exaggerated or unrealistic
belief in one’s abilities, achievements, or importance. Individuals with this trait might believe
they are superior to others or capable of things far beyond their actual abilities. This behavior is
often associated with personality disorders, such as narcissistic personality disorder, and can
also be seen in people struggling with addiction or during the manic phase of bipolar disorder.

In addiction, an inflated sense of self can lead to risky behavior, as individuals may feel
invincible or believe they can handle larger amounts of substances without facing negative
consequences. This mindset can also hinder recovery, as the person may resist seeking help,
thinking they don’t need it or believing they can quit drugs or alcohol on their own.

Therapy is often necessary to help individuals with an inflated sense of self develop a more
realistic understanding of their abilities and limitations. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) and
motivational interviewing are common approaches used to help them recognize distorted
thinking patterns and build healthier, more balanced self-perceptions.
