What is Substance Use Disorder?
Substance use disorder (SUD) is a medical condition characterized by an individual’s inability to control their use of drugs or alcohol, even when it causes harm to their health, relationships, and daily life. SUD ranges from mild to severe, with severe cases commonly referred to as addiction. Individuals with substance use disorder often experience cravings, withdrawal symptoms, and a preoccupation with obtaining and using substances.
Treatment for substance use disorder typically involves a combination of detoxification, therapy, and medication-assisted treatment (MAT), as well as support from family and peer groups. Recovery requires addressing both the physical dependence and the psychological factors that contribute to substance abuse.
