Residential Treatment Program in Arizona

Residential Treatment Program

If you or someone you love is struggling with substance abuse or a mental health condition, you may be wondering what kind of care is truly needed. For many people, outpatient visits a few times a week are not enough. A residential treatment center (RTC) offers something more: a safe, structured place to live and receive intensive care around the clock.

This page explains what a residential program is, who it helps, what happens in them, what to look for, and how to find the right one.

What Is a Residential Treatment Program?

Legacy Recovery Centers’ residential program is a licensed, psychiatrist-led luxury facility. Individuals stay on-site while receiving treatment for substance use disorders, mental health conditions, or both.

It is designed for individuals who need more support than weekly therapy provides but do not require acute hospital care and not primarily for medical emergencies.

Residents typically stay for 30, 60, or 90 days.

Who Is A Residential Treatment Program For?

Residential treatment works well for people who:

  • Have tried outpatient treatment without lasting success
  • Live in an environment that makes recovery harder
  • Are dealing with both addiction and a mental health condition at the same time
  • Need a safe distance from people or situations tied to their substance use
  • Require consistent supervision and structured daily support

You do not have to be in crisis to benefit from residential care. Many people choose it because they want a focused, supported start to their recovery.

What Happens Inside a Residential Treatment Program?

Residential treatment centers are organized around a daily schedule. Structure is a key part of why it works. Residents wake, eat, attend therapy, participate in group activities, and rest at consistent times. This routine helps the brain and body begin to reset.

Treatment includes:

Individual therapy. A trained therapist meets with each resident one-on-one. Sessions may use evidence-based approaches with strong research support, such as:

  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Somatic Experiencing
  • Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprogramming (EMDR)
  • Dialectical Behavior Therapy
  • Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT)
  • Motivational Interviewing.

Group therapy. Residents meet in small groups to share experiences, build skills, and support one another. Many people find group therapy to be one of the most powerful parts of treatment.

Medical care. Medical staff are on-site or on-call. For people with substance use disorders, the treatment may include medically supervised detox, withdrawal management, or medication-assisted treatment (MAT).

Psychiatric services. As part of the treatment plan, a psychiatrist may oversee medication and mental health care.

Family involvement. As addiction and mental health conditions affect everyone, the best programs involve family members in the recovery process. These take the form of education sessions, family therapy, or scheduled visitations.

Life skills and wellness. Examples of these types of offerings include nutrition education, physical activity, mindfulness, and planning for life after treatment.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Many people entering residential treatment are dealing with both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition. This is called a dual diagnosis, or co-occurring disorders. These may commonly include depression and alcohol use disorder, anxiety and opioid use, or PTSD and stimulant misuse.

Relapse often follows if both conditions are not treated together. The best residential programs treat both at the same time, with an integrated care team that includes addiction specialists and mental health clinicians.

What to Look for in a Residential Treatment Center

Not all programs are the same. Here are some things to check when choosing a facility:

What Does Recovery Look Like After A Residential Program?

Care does not end with the completion of a residential program. It’s an opportunity to consider the next level of support, such as stepping down to a partial hospitalization program (PHP) or intensive outpatient program (IOP) before returning to everyday life.

As a lifelong process, recovery includes continued therapy, peer support, and community connection. Programs such as 12-step groups, SMART Recovery, or individual counseling can provide long-term support.

Frequently Asked Questions

Most programs run for 30, 60, or 90 days. This depends on the severity of the condition, your history with treatment, and your personal goals.

Inpatient hospitalization is for medical or psychiatric emergencies and typically lasts only a few days. Residential treatment is designed for individuals who are medically stable but need longer intensive daily support, focused on therapy and recovery skills.

We allow cell phones after 7 days for two hours every evening. We do make exceptions for business owners and for other legitimate reasons where patients may need access to their phones.

Dual diagnosis treatment addresses both a substance use disorder and a mental health condition at the same time. You may benefit from it if you have been diagnosed with depression, anxiety, PTSD, bipolar disorder, or another mental health condition alongside a substance use problem. Integrated treatment improves outcomes compared to treating each condition separately.

We can refer you to select facilities where you can detox before admission.

Most people transition to a lower level of care, such as a partial hospitalization program (PHP) or intensive outpatient program (IOP). At Legacy Recovery, we will work with you to create a clear aftercare plan, including ongoing therapy, medication management, peer support groups, and sober living housing if needed.

Legacy Recovery is cash-pay only.

We take a personalised approach and offer integrated care. We offer psychiatric assessment, individual and group therapy, treatment for co-occurring disorders, and complementary practices such as mindfulness or yoga.
