Nervous System Regulation Through Sound

Safe and Sound Protocol Arizona

The Safe and Sound Protocol (SSP) is a listening-based intervention designed to support nervous system regulation, stress resilience, and a greater sense of safety in the body. What Is the Safe and Sound Protocol?

The Safe and Sound Protocol is a structured auditory program that uses specially filtered music to help support regulation and social engagement. Many people living with trauma, chronic stress, or anxiety feel stuck in a state of hypervigilance (always on edge) or shutdown (numb, disconnected, exhausted). SSP is designed to gently support the nervous system’s ability to shift out of survival mode.

SSP is often used as part of a broader therapeutic approach—not as a standalone fix. It may help some individuals feel calmer, more present, and more able to tolerate emotional experiences and relationships. Because everyone’s nervous system responds differently, SSP is typically introduced thoughtfully, with monitoring and clinical guidance.

At Legacy Recovery Center, SSP is integrated into a comprehensive treatment plan that includes approximately 40 hours of clinical services per week, such as individual therapy, group therapy, psychiatric care, and holistic wellness activities. When appropriate, SSP can complement trauma-focused work (like EMDR), body-based therapy (like Somatic Experiencing), and skills-based modalities (like CBT/DBT).
